Fifteen Days

Crosby in mid-bark

This year's festivities seemed so much more subdued. The Chans were notably smaller this year. Due to sad circumstances. The Ongs were in full force as usual. It's kinda an eye opener being with them - the Hokkien loud mouthed, liquor swilling, blackjack gambling side of my lineage. The Ong cousin-in-laws have always upheld Jo and I as the more refined girls they want their daughters to emulate (don't laugh): the Undergraduate and the demure PL girl. It's hard to relate to the relatives. Tight-lipped and English-speaking Chans have more in common with us than drunk and earthy Ongs. Still, I'm really only close to my Gu Jie and Bakbak from my dad's side. They are the auntie and uncle I visited weekly when I was a kid. Now, my parents make it a point that we go to my Mahmah's house at least once a month to hang out with them too. The rest of the paternal cousins are a mess of faces and names, who used to ask about our little girl ballet classes and now seem stunned that we've grown.

My cousin and I took a similar photo 2o years ago!

Spring is here. Festivities or not, there is beauty in life lived in the new man.
