Who watches the watchers?
Watchmen was good. I like the multi-layered concept of superheroes who are amoral and psychopathic. Heroes are not inherently altruistic anyway. That the creator, Moore, recognized that and wanted to portray superheroes realistically (it is not an oxymoron, haters!) makes the series/genre even more attractive. Going to read the graphic novel so as to explore the nuances that the movie can't fully capture. Exciting! From the reviews I've read, Rorschach is a fan favourite and he is written well for the movie script. I like him! Was telling Yenny that he is cool cos he's consistent throughout the movie. I don't share his beliefs in vigilantism and vengeance, but that he doesn't compromise on his principles kinda makes him the moral centre. Even more so than the Nite Owl, who's also likeable for his everyman status. I found the Manhatten-Silk Spectre's love thingie very tiresome and I'm generally unsympathetic. Whether it's because the original writing for SS II was misoygnistic and two dimensional remains to be seen; after I read the graphic novel. The silly blue guy aka Dr Manhatten is irritating and boring and his exhitionistic tendency is damn strange. Yeah yeah, we get he's becoming more and more detached from humanity, but it'll help if he puts on a loin cloth once in awhile. Hope I don't get shot by Watchmen fans for blatant ignorance. DRIVEBY! I also read that some fans aren't happy because there's no intelligent interpretation by Zack Snyder the director (IT RHYMES!) and that he is too "reverent" to the book. Aiyo, sometimes people just like to complain too much. Faithful = Excessive adoration. Not faithful= Cop-out. Tsk. Final note: I can't believe that Hallelujah was by a Jew-Zen songwriter and that it isn't a religious song even though it has religious references! I've been listening to it for years and never bothered to check out the lyrics. As usual, the boys had to go spoil it for me by making many innuendos. Still Jeff Buckley's version > all the many other versions including original. |
